May

This morning I was asking God for revelation and practical wisdom and it doesn’t always come in ways we might expect. I think if we are paying attention the Holy Spirit will show us things in the natural that represent spiritual principles. Jesus said “the Kingdom of God is at hand” (Mark 1:15).

Revival

on Monday, 07 March 2016.

Revival

The new buzzword in the Christian community seems to be revival. To some revival conjures up images of large tents and outspoken evangelists. To others it means repentance, fasting, and waving 2 Chronicles 7:14 as a banner. And perhaps, more recently, pocket New Testaments and Romans road wristbands. So perhaps revival is in the eye of the beholder.

Sanctifried Marriage

Sanctifried Marriage

In the last month or so I have seen an influx of couples that are either throwing in the towel of marriage, or are considering it. One of the common statements made is something like, “I never would have thought I would consider divorce after 5, 15, 30, 40……. years of marriage (fill-in the blank). I’m not just seeing this in terms of a pastor or counselor, but as a friend and in my extended family as well.

The Days Ahead

The Days Ahead

Have you ever sat back and thought how exciting the times really are? In Esther 4:14 we read, “For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

The Corkscrew Effect

The Corkscrew Effect

There are many signs that we are in the end times of this age (Matthew 24). We could get caught up in too much prophecy watch and miss out on what God has placed right in front of us. But we are living in exciting times. Just think we could have been born any time in history, but God chose you to help in these last days.

Projects in Dekalb

Projects in Dekalb

Soon the weather will be conducive to start construction projects and yard clean-up for the elderly and disabled. Crossfire Ministries holds a Kingdom mentality. We are not to just sit and wait for the return of Christ, we are to live empowered lives and take back any ground the enemy claims for his own. Servant Evangelism is an awesome tool to do just that.

Trials

Trials

Have you ever been through a trial that you thought would never end, or that just didn’t seem necessary? You knew God has (or had) His hand in it, but you just couldn’t understand why? This morning I was contemplating a trial that I seem to be under. Even though the Lord showed me a couple of weeks ago that I would see a period of spiritual dryness, it does not make it any easier to understand why. Through a vision God showed me a temporary shelter in the wilderness that was consumed with fire and blown over by a mighty wind. It was all that I could do (in the vision) to hold on to a nearby tree without blowing away myself. Through prayer I was led to the story of Job in chapter one for the interpretation.

Dear Jesus

on Monday, 15 December 2014.

Dear Jesus

Dear Jesus,

When You called me to ministry You left out some minor, but important details. You never told me that I would become an administrator, a financial planner, a website developer, or even a referee. All I ever intended to do was introduce you to others, and fulfill the Great Commission. But I want to thank You for your Word especially Romans 8:28, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” The enemy has attacked us many different ways over the last year. Every time we gain momentum it seems the rug gets pulled out from under us. I understand that You do not cause these things and yet You somehow turn them to our advantage. I’ve come to see every attack as a confirmation. Every time the ministry, my family, or I get attacked it makes me want to do more for You.

Financial Freedom

on Monday, 13 October 2014.

Financial Freedom

One of the best reasons I have ever heard for being financially responsible is to be available to God. To have freedom to respond to God with our finances. I’m not going into the mechanics of tithing and savings, but it is important to understand that Satan will use every weapon at his disposal. He will use the lust of the flesh, the lust of eyes, and the pride of life to destroy us (cf. 1 John 2:16). One of his weapons is to bother our finances. Money is the number one leading cause of divorce today. Financial troubles cause worry that ultimately takes our focus off of God. We need to see this attack for what it is, a spiritual attack!

Guard Your Heart

Guard Your Heart

When the disciples asked for signs about the end of the age Jesus told them, “And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:10-12). We can be absolutely certain that our enemy, Satan, can read these signs better than anyone. He is a Bible expert and he has been twisting and distorting the Word for thousands of years. We see in Revelation 12:12, “For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time." So we should expect that Satan will attack with fury as we head into the last minutes of this age before the return of Christ.

Keep Us In Your Prayers

Keep Us In Your Prayers

What does this even mean anymore? I heard of yet another celebrity that is in a life threatening situation. The family released a statement: “keep us in your thoughts and prayers.” I think the concept of prayer has become a watered down “go to” statement for when people get in trouble or become sick. The concept of prayer has gotten so watered down that it only seems like a nice gesture toward someone else. I suppose it really matters what you believe about prayer and who you are praying to. The definition of prayer is: a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship.

Serving is an Honor

Serving is an Honor

We sometimes get the wrong idea about being a servant. Servanthood has a negative connection to slavery or menial labor for minimal wages. However, I want to challenge you to think of servanthood as an opportunity, a privilege, and an honor.

Firm Footing

Firm Footing

I haven’t spent a lot of time on the beach, but when I think of the beach I am inclined to picture the kind of beach found in New England, more than any place else. For some reason I think of a beach house, surrounded by the lattice fence that stops sand from blowing and little patches of grass and weeds growing wherever they can find a firm place to root. I think we all get the construction parable that Jesus taught in Matthew 7:24-27. He told us, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (v. 24). He goes on to teach us that if we don’t have a firm foundation the rain and wind (life in a fallen world) will wash away our house.

Spiritual Bologna Sandwiches

Spiritual Bologna Sandwiches

School started this week and it’s nice to be back in a routine. The first couple of days the kids packed their lunches, because they didn’t know what to expect at school. Yesterday my youngest took a chance on the school menu. This morning my oldest was telling me all the food options available at the middle school and decided not to take a lunch. I remember when my wife and I were first married 16 years ago, she used to pack my lunch before work. I told her one day that I could never get tired of bologna sandwiches. After about two weeks I finally had to tell her I was sick of bologna. I always brought my lunch, because I knew what to expect, even if I didn’t always like it.

Clothed and in Our Right Minds

on Tuesday, 29 July 2014.

Clothed and in Our Right Minds

I have been studying and comparing the Synoptic Gospels over the summer. Mathew, Mark, and Luke have a lot of similarities, but also convey the story of Jesus through different lenses. I am absolutely thrilled to see Jesus teach, heal the sick, cast out demons, and perform creative miracles through the eyes of each reader. One of the stories that most of us are acquainted with is the man called Legion. He is named Legion because of the number of demons in him. (Mathew 8:28-34; Mark 5:1-20; Luke 8:26-39) Mathew tells the story slightly different than Mark and Luke. We are told that Jesus meets this man who was a terror to himself, and everyone around him. He could not be controlled by any physical restraints and would cut himself with stones and cry out day and night. The story goes on to tell how the demons in him were cast out into pigs that ran over a cliff and drown.
